ACJ TOURS MANSA TO PUSH FOR CHILD FRIENDLY SERVICES IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM

With emerging and rising human rights concerns, the administration of the criminal justice system poses greater challenges all over the world, Zambia being no exception.Whilst it is recognized that everyone is entitled to the enjoyment, fulfillment and protection of their fundamental human rights, it is cardinal to appreciate that the child by reason of his physical and mental vulnerability needs special safeguards and care including appropriate legal representation and protection in their life time.

Children that come into conflict and contact with the law deserves a Child friendly environment that will promote their respect and participation in the judicial system. It is for this reason that ACJ has remained so kin in promoting best practices of handling children in the justice system.

The improvisation by the Magistrates to clear Courts when dealing with cases involving  children is still not  child friendly as the environment remains intimidating and traumatizing for  children. The judicial process leaves a negative psychological and emotional effect in  children’s lives and the way forward is to establish separate child friendly court systems that will put into consideration the special needs of  children no matter their case. This recognition implies that children are not like adults and consequently, are entitled to be treated differently.
