Eighty four pupils have dropped out of school this year alone in preference to early marriages in Chembe district of Luapula Province.

The pupils are from the newly upgraded Kundamfumu and Myengele secondary schools.

Head teachers from the two schools confirmed this to General Education Minister Dennis Wamchinga when he visited the learning institutions on Sunday.

Kundamfumu Secondary School head teacher Bertha Malasha said 31 out of over 60 grade 12 pupils did not write their examinations this year due to long distances to school and early marriages among other challenges.

And Myengele Secondary School head teacher Victor Chanda said 18 boys and 12 girls dropped out of school due to pregnancies’ and marriage rush.

Meanwhile, Dr Wanchinga has expressed concern about the reports.

Dr Wanchinga says this is why the government has embarked on a massive program of upgrading some primary schools into secondary ones in order to shorten the distances pupils cover to access education services every day.
